This Sunday we welcome Jennifer Greene, our Director of Religious Exploration, to the pulpit. Her sermon is titled Matters of the Heart — the Denominational Study/Action Issues Before Us. Jennifer came to us from the UU Fellowship of Bellport, where she served as a lay leader for many years. She is also part of the Reverence for Life Team for the Unitarian Universalist Animal Ministry, and will be coordinating the UUAM booth in the exhibit hall this summer at General Assembly.

Jennifer was a preteen when her family started attending Cedar Lane UU Church in Maryland, and she still remembers her delight at discovering people who were asking the same kind of questions she was. Jennifer's son, Dan Garisto, is an 11th grader in SNUUC's senior youth group.

Jennifer says, "To me, 'Unitarian Universalist' and 'activist' feel redundant; I feel more spiritually whole when my actions are aligned with my values, and when I'm able to inspire others toward positive change. I agree with our Unitarian forebear and abolitionist, Theodore Parker, who preached that the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice. When I was just a babe, the great preacher and civil rights leader Martin Luther King famously declared this same hopeful vision, and still our struggles continue—against racism, economic injustice, war, and other forms of oppression.

"King's widow Coretta and their son Dexter both became dedicated vegans and advocates for animals, and so have I. It gives me joy to practice nonviolence every day through my food choices, and to help others do the same—in a way that's compassionate and humble and loving, I hope! By choosing vegan whenever you can, you'll help hasten the day when billions of individuals don't suffer at human hands, simply for taste, convenience, or tradition. Yes, food is a very personal matter. When people ask me why they should eat more plant foods, here's what I say: because it's better for you, better for the planet, and most important, it's consistent with your own values of kindness, mercy, and justice."

The RE Committee is meeting this Sunday at noon in the RE wing.

Just about everyone enjoys Coffee after our service on Sundays. We need volunteers if we are to continue to have Sunday Coffee Hour. Volunteers are needed for all the Sundays in March. It does not have to be elaborate. You can simply bring 1/2 gallon of milk and come at 10am and make and serve coffee, food is optional. Ask a friend or member of a committee you are on to do it with you. Also watch for “pot luck" Sundays where you can bring one thing to share. Please choose a date and speak with Mary Brower or Lisa in the office to schedule. You can also sign up on the sheet; it’s on the coffee table on Sunday.

Security at SNUUC Once again cars were vandalized during an evening event at SNUUC, this time on February 4. The car windows were broken and things were stolen. We have increased exterior lighting and will call the Freeport Police Department when we have evening events to ask that they increase their drives through the property. The board plans to investigate what surveillance equipment might deter future break-ins. In the meantime, it might help to keep out of sight any valuables you may leave in your vehicle parked on the property.

Is this your year to explore the potential of Compassionate Communication in your personal or professional life? Rev. Paul Ratzlaff first introduced Marshall Rosenberg’s process of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) to SNUUC in 2003. Since then, more than 50 members and friends have participated in one or more of the 13-session series offered at SNUUC in the fall and spring of each year. Each practice group works with the text Nonviolent Communication – A Language of Life, 2nd ed, by Marshall Rosenberg, PhD. and related interactive exercises which work to support the teachings presented within each chapter. Building on this active participation, the Compassionate Communication practice group has become a vital small group ministry at SNUUC, open to all adults and youths (11th grade and up). Participants have reflected on the depth of connections made within the group as well as the potential for transformation in their outside relationships as they learn to communicate compassionately and clearly with new skills and empathy. The next 13-session series begins Saturday, February 5. Join us in the Foyer from 9:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. for 13 Saturday mornings. Pre-registration is requested, so if you plan on attending the fall series, or know someone who is interested in joining us, please contact Anne Fleming (afleming528@gmail.com) or Barbara Singer (barbara.singer@gmail.com).

Early in 2011, a local chapter of the national UU Christian Fellowship (UUCF) will be forming in the Metro NY district. Led by our own Rev. Kelly Murphy Mason, a former VP of the UUCF, the chapter will meet on a monthly basis for evenings of fellowship and discussion, religious education and spiritual deepening. The Metro NY UU Christian Fellowship (MNY-UUCF) will meet the first Wednesday of every month 7:30-9:00 beginning on February 2, 2011, at the Community Church of New York in Manhattan.

The first several meetings of MNY-UUCF will be devoted to discussion of the Skinner House Books volume, Christian Voices in Unitarian Universalism. While it is available online from the UUA Bookstore, prior purchase of the book is not necessary. The lines of inquiry will be kept open-ended, so people can explore personal concerns as well as religious questions. How can Christian spirituality and Unitarian Universalist identity become more mutually enriching? That's something people are bound to discover together in these ongoing conversations.

Since the first inaugural meeting of MNY-UUCF falls on the festival of Candlemas, all attendees are encouraged to bring candles with them on February 2nd for blessing from a shared chalice lighting. UUs throughout the Metro NY District are warmly invited to attend: clergy members, religious educators, and lay leaders, cradle UUs and Christian "come-outers", recovering Catholics and fundamentalists, the theologically committed and the relatively uninformed, true believers and the merely Christian-curious. Anyone in the region with any degree of interest in the Jesus event, Christian traditions, or gospel stories is most welcome. Please feel free to contact the Rev. Mason via e-mail at UUminKMM@Gmail.com for further details -- and please be sure to pass the word along! Information about the national UU Christian Fellowship can be found at its website, www.uuchristian.org.

Can you help for Christmas Eve? These are the tasks we need done to make Christmas Eve special. Some involve being on stage and some are behind-the-scenes roles. Won’t you consider volunteering for one of them?

Share the Light is an anonymous gift giving program which provides gifts at holiday season to needy children who were or are in foster care and may not otherwise receive a holiday gift. When you sign up you receive an information sheet about a child giving the age, interests and possible gift options. Then you purchase the gift, wrap it in holiday paper and bring it to SNUUC before Sunday December 12 for the Breidings to pick up and distribute. This program has been ongoing since 1994 with the generous support of the three local congregations; Freeport, Garden City and Shelter Rock. We need you! Doug Breiding will be at SNUUC this Sunday November 21 both before and after service to sign up participants and they will have child information sheets available for assignment. Torpey has taught BSF at SNUUC once before and will offer it again this fall. They organize activities that an individual or a family could undertake. Island Harvest has a Turkey and Trimmings Collection Campaign (TTCC). They need dozens of extra volunteers to help at Supermarket Food Collections and other events where they collect turkeys and canned and packaged food, and then sort and box the donated food. Contact Joan Flynn, joan@islandharvest.org or 516-294-8528 ext. 21 to register. A Conference on Veterans and Homelessness will take place on Saturday, November 20 from 9-3 at the UU Congregation of Shelter Rock. Services for vets on Long Island are inadequate; it's up to us to do something to shed light on the gravity of the problem. Keynote speaker Wilkens Young has gone from prison to homeless to homeowner since the year 2000. There will be numerous speakers and a panel discussion with people from various Veterans Services agencies. The conference is run by John Javis of the Veterans Health Alliance of Long Island, a consortium of 70 providers of service for veterans and co-sponsored by the Men's Group and the Shelter Rock Forum; there is a $3 donation for a light breakfast and sandwich lunch. Please join them for all or part of this important day.

Flowers on the chancel can be donated for any reason; in memory of a loved one, to honor or celebrate a special event or just because you like flowers on the chancel! Your commemoration will be listed in the Order of Service and the Open Line. Please sign up on the Chancel Flowers Calendar on the bulletin board in the foyer and donate $25 to pay for the flowers. Speak to Lisa in the office for more details.

We need volunteers if we are to continue to have refreshments during our Sunday Coffee Hour. This Sunday is the only date that has been filled for November and beyond. Rev. Catherine Torpey will be on sabbatical from January 1, 2011 until May 31, 2011. A sabbatical, much like a Sabbath, is intended to be a time of rest and reflection, allowing one to return to the usual round of duties with new vision and renewed enthusiasm. Unitarian Universalist congregations commonly grant their ministers a sabbatical leave sometime between the fifth and seventh year of service. Ministerial sabbaticals often include study and/or travel, and provide the opportunity for personal and vocational enrichment. The time away from the usual duties of ministry is intended to foster creativity, fresh insight and greater receptivity to the ineffable. A sabbatical benefits a congregation in several ways:

O It encourages the minister to hone his or her skills for spiritual and institutional leadership

o It encourages longevity in ministerial calls by giving time for renewal by both the congregation and the minister

o It gives the congregation a chance to challenge itself during the minister’s absence, and to depend upon its inner resources, as well as the generosity of local ministers and congregations

This Sunday’s sermon will be Clay in the Hands of the Potter to honor the Jewish High Holy Days, with Rev. Catherine Torpey.

The Board has changed its meeting day to the third MONDAY of the month. Their next meeting is Monday, September 20 at 7pm in the foyer.

Since the world learned of the floods now devastating Pakistan, conditions have worsened dramatically. As of August 23, the Pakistani government estimates that 17.2 million people are affected by the floods — more than the Haiti earthquake, the 2005 South Asia earthquake, and the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami combined. The growing enormity of this humanitarian disaster has compelled UUSC and the Unitarian Universalist Association to launch their UUSC-UUS Joint Pakistan Flood Relief Fund.
Most recently, rivers flowing from the flooded areas in the northwest have swelled with water and are deluging the Sindh and Punjab provinces in the south. This is sure to have serious long-term implications for all of Pakistan. The fertile Punjab is the breadbasket for a country where a third of its population of 170 million people live below the poverty line. Hildegard Schubert has graciously offered to collect donations from SNUUC. At last Sunday’s service she collected more than $200. If you have not yet had the chance to donate, Hildegard will be in the foyer after this Sunday’s service. If you would like to donate by check, please make it payable to "UUSC-UUA Pakistan Flood Relief Fund”.

Building Your Own Theology Please join Rev. Torpey for a class in "Building Your Own Theology". This is one of the most enduringly popular of UU curricula because it gives participants an opportunity to learn a little and explore a lot. We'll do the first three sessions, which explore how religious liberals can "do" theology, your personal spiritual autobiography, and what constitutes religious experience. We'll meet on three Tuesday nights, September 28, October 5 and October 19 from 7 to 9pm. We'll need a minimum of four participants; please commit to all three by signing up on the sheet on the easel in the foyer.

Is this your year to explore the potential of Compassionate Communication in your personal or professional life? Rev. Paul Ratzlaff first introduced Marshall Rosenberg’s process of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) to SNUUC in 2003. Since then, more than fifty individual members and friends have chosen to participate in one or more of the 13-session series offered at SNUUC in the fall and spring of each year.

The next 13-session series begins Saturday, October 2nd. Join us in the Foyer from 9:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. for 13 Saturday mornings from October 2 through January 15. Pre-registration is requested, so if you plan on attending the fall series, or know someone who is interested in joining us, please contact Anne Fleming (afleming528@gmail.com) or Barbara Singer (barbara.singer@gmail.com).
